Abstract
Calculation of accurate ocean wave energy values is crucial for evaluating the feasibility of the installation of wave energy converters. Wave power can be calculated using a spectral parametric formulation. This parametric formulation is a function of the significant wave height and the wave energy period. The energy period is usually estimated using ad-hoc formulations based on characteristic wave periods modified by a calibration coefficient. In this work, an analysis of the suitability of the diverse calibration coefficients for the wave energy period under the Peru Sea Basin, open sea conditions, is carried out. The calibration coefficients based on standard sea spectrums generated considerable errors when validated regarding the wave power. However, excellent results were obtained when using our proposed calibration coefficients calculated solely based on spectral data from the Peruvian Sea Basin.
